If you feel emotionally disconnected you’re not imaging it.

The Problem

In a word, virtual reality, your phone is robbing you of life.

We are social animals that require living interaction, touch, affection, and attention from each other. Think about this, when a baby is born should you place the baby on Mom’s chest or give it a phone?  It’s really a no-brainer, but it has taken over the entire world.

You think your connected because you email and text and so forth, but it’s all mind, only mind, and all your biology is separated from the interaction. Your body is starving for touch, affection, feeling and experiencing life. Think of it this way, you can talk about the experience of eating an apple, but the other person will never ever know, until the actual experience of eating an apple. Virtual worlds may be fascinating but the price you pay is feeling lost and invisible.

Next is the issue of simple social validation; by interacting with and in the presence of people the others validate your existence.  But now, everyone is home on a phone, or you can see people in restaurants at a table, no conversation whatsoever, each one absorbed on their phones in their virtual world.

Possible Solutions

Here are some practical actions that will make a real difference.

First and foremost, observe common sense courtesy in social settings.  An example is dinner, DO NOT SET YOUR PHONE ON THE TABLE. Be sure it is silenced.  Otherwise, you are saying to your friends or partner that the phone is more important than them.

Remove virtual space from the experience of dinning together, which, since the beginning of time, has been the foundational corner stone of social intercourse.  Bring back its significance, insist on it.

Next, make it a habit to always get out of the apartment or house and into the world. Refuse to live only on screen.  Experience the cold wind, the rain, the sun.  Go to the market, find a new coffee shop, walk the local mall, and above all, make time to see your friends and family if you have any.  Life is short, very short, don’t wake up to that fact on your death bed, find it now!

Remember this, a phone should only be a tool, NOT YOUR WORLD.
